Thandiwe recalls herself from being “derailed” after being sexually harassed at 16 by a film director.

Throughout the entertainment industry sexual abuse and racism is a common issue exclaimed by The Line of Duty and Westworld star. They were discussing about the sad reality within the entertainment industry for years.

There was an interview with British Vogue, Thandiwe recalls she changed after the abuse.

Newton says, “There’s a moment where the ghost of me changed, you know, and it was then, it was 16,” She recallls. “He derailed me from myself utterly. I was traumatised. It was a kind of PTSD for sure. I was so distraught and appalled that a director had abused a young actress, and that it was happening elsewhere, minors getting abused and how f***ed up it was. I was basically waiting for someone to come along and say, ‘Well, what shall we do about this?’’’

Newton went on to state that she suffered with eating problems as a result of her trauma, and that she used food as a coping mechanism. Further she says, “I punished my body to try and find my heart.”

In the interview, Newton also mentioned that she is officially reclaiming her birth name, Melanie Thandiwe. She also says that in future on screen credits she will be credited as “Thandiwe Newton.” The meaning of “Thandiwe is “beloved” in Zula.
“That’s my name,” she said. “It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine.”
