At Manchester Airport, frustrated travelers are stranded in long queues, with passengers strapped to their luggage racks and luggage. Pictures show hundreds of passengers queuing in large queues as covid waits for border checks at the airport’s new terminal 2. A Manchester airport spokesman said, “We know the queues at the border this afternoon are longer than usual.
“Immigration checks are the responsibility of the UK Border Force. And we review events with them to make sure that passengers enjoy the best possible experience. To understand how these conditions came about and move on.”
It comes when the tourism industry continues to face problems during the coronavirus pandemic. And as the Home Office acknowledges, the Border Force is struggling with staff shortages. Similar queues were also seen at Heathrow Airport on Friday night, with passengers said to be stuck in queues for five hours and complaining about social alienation. Hundreds of lawmakers were seen standing nearby, urging the Home Office to take immediate action. Families say they had to wait a long time. Because children under the age of 12 could not use e-gates due to limitations in facial recognition technology. Throughout the week, delays have been a problem for passengers at some airports, as border guards work to check tourists following covid’s travel rules.
The Home Office challenged how long people waited in queues. But acknowledged a shortage of staff as many Border Force agents were forced into self-isolation. Pictures of people being closely packed raised fears that covid would spread among people staying at airports. A Home Office spokesman said earlier:
Protecting the safety and health of the public is our number one priority. And we must never overlook safety and acknowledge to passengers the increase in time taken to cross the border by ensuring compliance with current health measures.
The need to complete the covid test has increased the number of tests that passengers must perform before boarding a plane or returning to the country. The queues at Manchester Airport Terminal 2 come after a major renovation of the building as part of a 1 billion conversion. The redevelopment will include 15 new restaurants, bars, and shops and ten 29-lane security lanes in the exit hall.
