Standard of beauty differs from country to country. It’s highly accepted that what’s beautiful in one part of the globe is not preferred by others. This also brings out a different aspect of beauty by people which could be harsh. In order to identify this an experiment was done by ‘Superdrug Online Doctor’ to observe the locally accepted beauty standards in various countries and compare this with one another.
In order to observe various perceptions on beauty in different countries, the site decided to contact 18 graphic designers in several countries and gave them an original picture of a girl and asked them to recreate the girl according to local beauty standards. Superdrug Online Doctor said that different views on beauty also have an impact from culture. The main goal of this project is to understand the unrealistic standard to beauty in different nations and how these differ.
Originally the idea was to find what their race finds attractive and mainly to find what kind of pressures they face by editing women’s pictures. Four men were added to the list of partner designers, with the condition that they seek input from women and make adjustments to the image based on their suggestions.
In some countries the photos are almost unrecognizable. In some countries they exaggerate towards hourglass shapes that represent a certain unrealistic view of women. In some other countries like European and Asian countries focus on slim and petite figures where in some cases they focus towards unhealthy. Next time they are hoping to include men in the study as well.
